MOUNTAIN TORTOISES

TURTLE and TORTOISE PRESERVATION GROUP

TURTLES OF THE WORLD Series
Testudinidae Number 1

The Mountain tortoises of the genus Manouria are considered the most primitive of the living tortoises. Brown Mountain tortoises and Black Mountain tortoises are the largest Asian tortoises, reaching 24” (50 cm) and 55 pounds (25 kg) in nature and much larger and heavier in captivity. The other member of the genus, the enigmatic Impressed tortoise, is poorly known in both nature and in captivity and is very rare in the collections of zoos and private tortoise breeders.

Vic Morgan has had a 20-year love affair with these personable and highly intelligent tortoises. He has kept them in lush outdoor enclosures in his native Florida and his focus on their daily care is unwavering. His excitement about Mountain tortoises is infectious. He has been breeding these rare tortoises for more than fifteen years and he received the World Class Reptile Breeder Award at the 2005 National Reptile Breeders Expo. Morgan has authored and co-authored many articles about the care, behavior, and everyday lives of Mountain tortoises, and he is excited to share his insights into the lives of Mountain tortoises through this book. MOUNTAIN TORTOISES is full of information about these tortoises’ lives in nature, including habitat, climate, and conservation needs and he also gives readers information about their captive care, including enclosure design, feeding, health information, and tips on breeding them, incubating their eggs, and caring for young tortoises. $14.95 + $2.00 s/h $14.95 + $6.00 s/h internationally
